The Story

Growing up along the Gulf of Mexico, I love everything about the sea. The water, the beaches, the boats, the seafood, the people, and the stories. Especially the stories.

Shrimp on Wheels is inspired by my personal love of shrimp and family get-togethers. As a kid we used to spend our summers fishing and crabbing in Corpus Christi and Galveston Bay. At my brother's beach house in Galveston, there was a local shrimper who sold his product to his wholesale clients in the morning and then delivered his surplus shrimp throughout the neighborhoods in a pick up truck; ringing a bell much like the neighborhood ice cream truck.

(Almost) every weekend Mom would make up coleslaw or some kind of relish plate and we'd ice the drinks down. Aunts, uncles, cousins and friends began showing up early afternoon and we’d start boiling our spicy crab boil. Soon after we would hear the distant bell of the “shrimp truck” and we were defenseless to our Pavlovian response. We couldn’t wait to dig into those delicious gifts of the Gulf. Served up with some spicy corn, sausage, and potatoes; we’d sit around a couple of picnic tables devouring these tender crustaceans, enjoying our favorite libation, and we'd smile and laugh as the stories began to unfold.

So many people I know identify with this simple pleasure of life and I want to help continue the tradition within my own family as well as the families of my friends and neighbors. It doesn’t get much more basic than this, but it doesn’t get much better than this either.
